A walk through the history of Benissa
Benissa is not just a beach destination; it is a journey through time. Its cobbled streets, old mansions and Moorish courtyards take us back to past centuries. Every corner tells a story, every stone has an story to tell.
Benissa's history is rich and diverse, reflecting the influence of multiple cultures over time. This land, overlooking the Mediterranean, has witnessed human presence since prehistoric times, with evidence dating back to the Neolithic period, as evidenced by the cave paintings found here. Over the centuries, Benissa has been inhabited by Iberians, Romans, Arabs and Christians. The remains of coins and amphorae on the coastline testify to the Roman presence in the region.
The name "Benissa" comes from the Arabic "Banu-Issa", it is no coincidence that many of the rural areas of Benissa still retain names of Arabic origin, which supports the idea that there was a significant Arab population when Jaume I the Conqueror arrived in 1248. After the expulsion of the Moors in 1609, the region was repopulated by people from the Pyrenees, Catalonia and Aragon. From this period, vestiges of the walls that surrounded the town still remain.
The Heart of Benissa
In the centre of the town we find one of the best kept treasures of the Marina Alta. The historic quarter of Benissa is one of the best preserved in the region. Unknown to many, in its streets and old buildings we can discover a history that can be breathed in the medieval architecture of its buildings.
Starting with the Plaza del Portal, where we will find the town hall building, a construction dating from 1790 and which was an old hospital for decades, we can follow a route that will take us to unique places such as the house of Juan Vives with its open porticoes in the form of a fish market, the Sala del Consell with its arches carved in stone or the Convent of the Franciscan Fathers, which dates back to 1613.
The Puríssima Xiqueta church
The Basílica Menor de la Puríssima Xiqueta y Sant Pere Apòstol is another of Benissa's most emblematic monuments. This church, built in neo-Gothic style, was erected between 1902 and 1929 and is considered the symbol of the town. The construction of the new parish church of La Puríssima Xiqueta began in 1902 and, thanks to the contributions of private individuals and the collective effort of the inhabitants of Benissa, it was inaugurated in 1929. This new church replaced the old fortress church of San Pedro Apóstol.
Every year, Benissa celebrates its patron saint festivities in honour of the Puríssima Xiqueta on the fourth Sunday of April. During these festivities, one of the most outstanding events is the procession in which the aforementioned tablet of the virgin is carried. For this event, an innovative hydraulic system has been designed that allows the reliquary to be easily lowered to the altar and then placed on the processional platforms. This event is popularly known as "La Baixada de la Puríssima".
